Alaska State Flag History

The Alaska state flag, designed by John Bell (Benny) Benson, a thirteen year-old in an orphanage in response to a contest sponsored by the Alaska Department of the American Legion. The flag was adopted by the Territorial Legislature in May, 1927 as Alaska’s official flag. When Alaska entered the Union in 1959, the territorial flag became the state flag.

The blue field represents the sky, the sea, and mountain lakes, as well as Alaska’s wildflowers. Emblazoned on the flag are eight gold stars: seven in the constellation Ursa Major, or the Big Dipper. The eighth being the North Star, representing the northern most state. More on the Flag of Alaska.
